About the syllabus

"ABWE's Handbook for Short-term Medical Missionaries needs to be read by all healthcare students and professionals considering short-term missions service. The book brings together extensive experience from around the world, and comprehensive research in helps and resources. Every chapter flows from the Steffes’ service in small clinics to large mission hospitals, in primitive remote ministries to established “full-service” institutions. Bruce and Micky thoughtfully lay before the reader how to take along the family, even a family with small children.” - Jack Sorg, MD, International Director of Medical Missionary Enlistment for ABWE

Not just for short-termers and not just for medical people, this handbook should be read by anyone going into overseas missionary service. It is an excellent resource for church missions committees.

Dr. Steffes writes, “Along with your passport, visa, money, and Bible, make sure you take along a properly prepared heart and mind, bolstered by ongoing prayer.” And we might add, don’t forget to toss in the CD version of this book for a ready reference.

About the course instructors

Dr. Bruce Steffes is a general surgeon with an MBA residing in Fayetteville, NC. He has traveled extensively as a short-term missionary surgeon. He has provided welcomed relief to ABWE missionary surgeons and lectured at national and international medical mission conferences. A part-time faculty member in surgery at Duke University, he teaches physician assistants at Methodist College in Fayetteville. Bruce’s wife, Micky, accompanies him and provides invaluable financial consultation to mission fields besides being a busy mom of a two-year-old son, Sean.

Dr. Bob Cropsey is a career missionary surgeon with ABWE serving in Togo at the Karolyn Kempton Memorial Christian Hospital along with his wife, Shirley, RN, who has in recent years functioned as an OR nurse/anesthetist. The Cropseys have 4 married sons, all raised in Togo, and now active in ministry. Two sons are in the process of returning to the mission field and their youngest son is preparing to be a medical missionary. The Cropseys are presently on an extended medical furlough due to Shirley’s health and reside near Ann Arbor, MI.
