The Nicaragua Project Moves Ahead

By Larry and Beverly Smith 3/7/03

The ABWE Nicaragua Project, now known as El Centro ABEM (the ABWE Center), recently received a very generous gift from an anonymous donor for $400,000. This makes a total of nearly $500,000 given for this project, most of which has come in the last few months. Washington Heights Baptist Church in Kettering, Ohio, the sending church of Larry and Beverly Smith, jump-started this wave of gifts in July 2002 by receiving a special offering of approximately $40,000. Since then, others have joined in giving, making the current total.

The purpose of El Centro ABEM is multifold:

  1. To reach the unbelievers with the gospel through evangelistic outreaches.
  2. To provide a place for camps, seminars, and retreats.
  3. To provide theological training for pastors and church workers.

In order to accomplish this vision, we have purchased a 160-acre property outside of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. On this property, we plan to build baseball and softball fields, volleyball courts, a swimming pool and bathhouse, a building for large group meetings as well as a dining area supported by a commercial size kitchen, a similar size building for classroom, a library, resource center, and offices. Several small cabins will be built for overnight housing as required by particular events. All of this will be accomplished as God continues to provide the finances, and as our church partners assist us in this project.

The prayers of God's people are crucial for the success of this project, not only for the finances, but more importantly, that the Holy Spirit will move upon the people attending the events at this Center and accomplish His will in their lives.

The Nicaragua Team wants to express our deep gratitude to all of those who have teamed with us in this ministry. Not only has God done great things already, but we are confident He will continue to accomplish great things for His glory through this Center in Nicaragua.
