
Contrary to the opinion of too many people involved in world missions
today, Pre-Field Ministry or "Deputation," as it has been
referred to for years, is not a "necessary evil." Some
people say Pre-Field Ministry is a waste of time and money. Others
consider it a drudgery to be endured only as a means to a greater
end, that of "getting to the field."
What is Pre-Field Ministry? It is a wonderful opportunity
for the missionary to challenge churches with the burden God has
given him/her to reach a particular segment of "the regions
beyond." It is a time to learn to trust the Lord of the Harvest
to meet spiritual, emotional and material needs. It is a time when
the missionary appointee can learn to follow the day-by-day, often
moment-by-moment, leadership of the Holy Spirit as He unfolds a

Throughout Scripture we find examples of people who spent most of
their lives in countries other than their homelands, investing their
lives for God. Abraham left his home on a pilgrimage of faith toward
a far country known only to God. Joseph, through circumstances that
he never would have chosen, was greatly used of God in an alien
land. Ezekiel and Daniel were prophets in a distant land during
a time of exile. Great women such as Ruth and Esther also had an
impact for God far from their homes. All through redemptive history
God selected people to serve Him in places other than their homelands.
