Award Given to Kay Washer

Because she knew she was leaving Togo for the last time, Kay requested an audience with President Eyadema to thank him for his help in getting permission for the Blind School, allowing students to take their major exams, then permitting the students to go on to university.

Imagine her surprise when, at 8:30 a.m. on the morning of her departure Kay-along with fellow missionaries and Blind School co-workers, Jane Hankin and Jane Schmitz, and the school's blind Togolese director, Maitre Kwassivi-was received at the presidential palace where she was given the Ordre du Mono, one of Togo's highest honors. "The certificate says I am now an officer of the Order," Kay writes, "which worries me, because I'm not sure what is expected of me."

Acknowledging that the medal and certificate are handed out only to individuals, Kay says that her recognition is nevertheless recognition for the Blind School and its national and missionary staff who have worked so hard to keep the school in operation.
