EARTHQUAKE!

A powerful earthquake hit Gujarat, India, on the morning of January 29, 2001, leaving 30,000 people buried under the rubble of falling buildings, and hundreds of thousands more homeless. More than 260 aftershocks bombarded the region.

Uncertainty, fear, and hopelessness have gripped the people of Gujarat. ABWE's GAP ministry desires not only to help with relief, but also to impress on them the love and compassion of Christ. We want to use this unexpected opportunity to carry the gospel to those who have no hope of eternal life. With the funds supplied, GAP will:

  • Target several villages that experienced the most damage.
  • Partner with national Christians in determining how best to help. Urgent needs include clothing, blankets, mosquito nets, cooking pans, and medicine.
  • Begin rebuilding homes. This is the most important aspect, as it gives church planters an extended period of time in which to make friends and establish a witness for Christ.

Centuries of idolatry have captivated the minds of the Indian people. As we found during the cyclone project in Orissa, many people in India are ready to hear and receive the wonderful message of God's mercy and grace.

Please pray for India's one billion citizens. Pray especially for ABWE/GAP efforts to proclaim the hope of the gospel in earthquake-affected areas.

Send email to gapartners@abwe.org if you would like to participate in providing relief for EARTHQUAKE victims in Gujarat, India.
