If God Should Choose:
The authorized Story of Jim and Roni Bowers
By Kristen Stagg
On April 20, 2001, the plane in which missionaries Jim and Roni
Bowers and their children were riding was shot down over Peru in
a interception of a perceived drug plane. Roni and seven-month old
Charity were killed. This tragedy has touched the lives of millions
of people, believers and non-believers alike. If God Should Choose
portrays the Bowers' story coherently and completely. This sobering
work will leave readers more committed, in the words of Jim Bowers,
"To stay alert to the things that really matter, to cherish
their loved ones even more, to be ever ready to explain (and live)
the truth to friends who do not know Christ personally."
Update
If God Should Choose
tells about the life of Jim and Roni Bowers, but the story doesn't
conclude with the events of April 20, 2001. Jim continues to travel
to Peru periodically to organize teachers for the regional Bible
training institute in Aysana and meet with Peruvian pastors. He
is making plans with them to build a sports center in Iquitos, using
funds from the memorial established in Roni and Charity's memory.
One of the ministries Jim and Roni actively pursued was with Peruvian
youth. Shortly before Roni's death, the couple had been elected
as counselors of the local youth association in Iquitos and planned
to raise funds for a gymnasium for use in youth outreach.
The sports center to be constructed will provide a facility for
the 25 local churches in Iquitos. More importantly it will be used
to share the gospel with many young people in this city of 500,000.
The building plans call for permanent basketball and volleyball
courts, indoor soccer field, kitchen and recreation rooms under
roof, as well as outdoor soccer fields.
