New Initiatives for ABWE
After serving for 37 years in medical missions in Bangladesh,
Rebecca Davey was appointed as International Medical Consultant.
Becky is available to assist any established, fledgling, or proposed
medical work. This may involve evaluating the work, developing
programs and/or transitioning into more effective ministry. She
can help create educational programs for both missionary and national
personnel to guide in the ongoing medical outreaches of ABWE.
To talk with Becky, phone (425) 481-0553 or e-mail: Radav34@aol.com
Bill and Vicki Ivester have been appointed to direct WORD Ministries,
established to promote and facilitate effective translation and
literacy programs on all ABWE fields as a vital part of church-planting
efforts. With more than 25 trained and experienced consultant/facilitators
ready to help in various aspects of Bible translation and the production
of other Christian literature and literacy work, WORD Ministries
will provide training and guidance to ABWE missionaries and nationals
on the field and in North America. This will enable them to establish
programs and to produce materials in the heart language of the
people they serve. A translation and resource center will be established
in Harrisburg where personnel and materials will be readily available.

ITC Becomes CEIM
Properly skilled and trained people are the most valuable resources
in any organization. As believers in Jesus Christ, we certainly
would not discount the value of our spiritual resources, but
we realize that training is critical to an organization facing
the challenge of global evangelism. The current generation of
missionary recruits generally understands and values training,
and seeks to affiliate with organizations that provide appropriate
training opportunities.
Through the vision of Wendell Kempton and the leadership of Bob
Dyer, ABWE launched the Intercultural Training Center (ITC) in
1997. Bob returned to church planting, and ABWE Media Department's
director, Dr. Wayne Haston, was appointed to lead ABWE's training
programs, beginning in the fall of 2001.
In January 2002, ABWE's ITC program became CEIM, the Center for
Excellence in International Ministries. The name change connects
ABWE's training efforts to one of our corporate core values, Excellence.
CEIM hopes to help every member of the global ABWE team, whether
in the North American offices or on one of our nearly 80 mission
fields, to be equipped to conduct his/her ministry with greater
effectiveness.
The addition of the new International Training Facility at the
Harrisburg office is a major step toward accomplishing our training
mission. This facility includes a complex of three technology enhanced "smart" classrooms
as well as a computer-based training room.
MK Education Ministry
Missionary children are a vital part of the ABWE global family.
Of the 1,600 ABWE MKs. 600 are adults between the ages of 20-60.
That leaves a lot of children whose education is a priority for
their parents and missionary colleagues. Missionaries serving
with ABWE have the opportunity and the privilege of making the
decision regarding the education they desire and believe is best
for their children.
In 1998, Anna Ruth Hille retired after a "lifetime" in
teaching and administration in public and Christian schools, and
at Cedarville University. In 2001, she joined the Harrisburg office
and established the Missionary Children's Education Resource
Room. In addition to providing a variety of educational resources,
the goal of the MK education ministry includes:
- Assisting parents
in the education of their children
- Interviewing prospective MK
teachers
- Developing and directing the training of prospective
teachers
