A Time of Change - Durban, South Africa
By Dick & Ruth Gelina
We grandparents know what change is—especially if we haven't
seen our grandchildren for four years! South Africa would come
in for a close second in changes as you observe the differences
in the "new South Africa."
With new freedoms, however, come liberal laws that open the door
to social sins. From the high morals of the Afrikaners to the most
liberal legislation on abortion and homosexuality in the world;
from modesty on the beaches to nudity on television; from Christian
education in the schools to ecumenism in education. This country
that seemed so religious when we arrived 15 years ago now has proven
to be just the opposite.
Still, the ending of apartheid allows all South Africans to walk
a little taller. Previously disadvantaged groups such as Africans
and Indians are now expanding their horizons as they enjoy new
freedoms such as equal housing, better education, and job opportunities.
Fellow missionary, Dale Marshfield, comments that the Kwa-Zulu
Natal ministry team of ABWE missionaries and South African Christian
workers has found an open door for the gospel in this changing
social setting.
Recently a pioneer work began among Zulu-speakers.
Creative sports and youth ministries reach teenagers.
New church buildings go up each year.
The Baptist Bible College of Kwa-Zulu Natal has its largest-ever
student body.
Times of change often result in fear and insecurity. What better
time to present the peace and stability offered through a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ?
