ABWE's "History Book"

By Wendell W. Kempton
ABWE President (1971 – 2001)

I had the distinct privilege and honor of looking closely at ABWE's "History Book" for 30 years. Faithful missionaries wrote previous "pages" as they served under the leadership of Dr. Thomas, Mrs. Peabody, and Dr. Commons. The early days were filled with hard times, much sacrifice, and exploits that defy human comprehension. The mission was small—it was humble—but eager to please God in every undertaking.

As I came into leadership in 1971, we were a family of missionaries and administrators numbering around 300. I was keenly aware that we had to experience the daily blessing of almighty God. We were involved in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Colombia, and Spain. We had very few churches in those regions, but God helped us lay a good foundation for future ministries.

ABWE was blessed with administrators and missionaries who were visionaries. Their passion was to lead people to Christ, train them, and establish local churches. I watched carefully as administrators and missionaries teamed up to open 62 new countries during my leadership. It was exciting!

I have a grateful heart. God allowed me to be very close to ABWE's "History Book" and it was a fascinating read. I would like to thank all the local churches who entrusted us with their missionaries; the Board of ABWE who were so loyal and faithful; the dedicated missionaries; and the astute administration and staff.

The "chapter headings" of ABWE's history book all read the same:

"Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness,
and for his wonderful works to the children of men!"

AMEN and AMEN!
