Into Life Eternal
VERNON CHANDLER March 27, 1924 – June 11, 2004
The Lord took his faithful servant, Vernon Chandler, to heaven
on June 11, 2004, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Vern was born in Endicott, New York, on March 27, 1924. He came
to know Jesus Christ as his Savior as a boy. Vern served as a Naval
pilot during World War II and was a chaplain in the Naval Reserve.
He received his theological training at Columbia International University
and at Faith Seminary.
Vern was married to Marian Dahlstrom, a young World War II widow,
on July 30, 1946. He also became the father of three-year-old Julene.
Vern and Marian were appointed as ABWE missionaries to Japan in
October 1952. They arrived in Japan on January 1, 1954, and moved
to Kagoshima City on the southern Island of Kyushu. After two years
they moved to the town of Hyato.
Vern was known for his compassion and zeal in personal evangelism.
He never missed an opportunity to share Christ by word of mouth
and the distribution of tracts. Some of ABWE's first converts in
Japan who became faithful and mature believers were led to Christ
by Vern. In 1958, the Chandlers transferred to the great city of
Kobe. There, the Lord enabled them to have an effective witness
to all classes of people. Through their perseverance and faithful
ministry of God's Word, they had the privilege of establishing churches
in Higashi Nada Ku and Myodani. In 1983, the Chandlers retired in
the Johnson City, New York, area and continued to have a ministry
in churches and in the lives of many. In recent years, Vern suffered
with Alzheimers. Even in his nursing home he had a bright testimony
to all. During those years, his devoted wife and his daughter, Julene,
provided loving care for him. Vern leaves his wife, Marian; son
Mark Chandler; daughters Julene Dahlstrom and Sandra Rowland; eleven
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. We thank God for the
life and faithful ministry of Vernon Chandler. He epitomized the
truth of Daniel 12:3, “And they that be wise shall shine as the
brightness of the firmament and they that turn many to righteousness
as the stars for ever and ever.”
