ABWE Canada Appoints a New Director
The Canadian Council of ABWE is delighted to officially announce
the appointment of David W. Smith as the Director of ABWE Canada.
They rejoice in God's provision of David to strategically lead them
as they serve the churches of Canada.
David, along with his wife Cathy and their children, Andrew (20),
Joel (18), Hannah (14), and Matthew (12), have served with ABWE
since 1998, primarily with Global Access Partnerships (GAP) in a
ministry of church planting and assistance to Baptist churches in
Jamaica. Previously, the Smiths had served as church planters in
England for thirteen years. In addition to their responsibilities
with the Canadian Council of ABWE, the Smiths plan to maintain periodic
involvement with the GAP team in challenging church fellowships
in various countries to become missionary sending groups.
David brings many positive qualities and experiences to his new
role. He is a third generation MK who grew up in Jamaica and Australia
with his parents Roly and Luella Smith. He has ministered across
Canada in many churches and is widely known as an experienced missionary.
He has a personal relationship with many of ABWE's Canadian missionaries
and with the pastors of the churches who support them. He has a
vision to build the impact of ABWE Canada around the world.
David and Cathy are both graduates of London Baptist Bible College
(now Heritage College in Cambridge, Ontario) and have maintained
a long-term membership at Stoney Creek Baptist Church in London,
Ontario. David began his new role on July 1, 2004, and served in
a co-director role with Frank Bale until October 31, 2004, when
Frank retired from the position. Frank had served as Canadian Director
for twelve years. The Bales had also served in Brazil with ABWE
for ten years in the 70s. In 2005, Frank and Brenda will meet a
short-term teaching need in Lisbon, Portugal. A special celebration
was held at Stoney Creek Baptist Church on October 29, 2004, to
honor Frank and Brenda Bale for their service and to welcome David
and Cathy Smith to the new position.
