In their own words

Two international students from Iowa State University, who have had a long-term relationship with Mallory Parmerlee and Campus Baptist Church, speak about the struggles they faced upon coming to the US, how God’s people impacted them, and how Christ changed their lives. These are their own words, and their names have been omitted for their protection in their home country.

I was alone by myself and isolated when I first came to the US. I did not have peace in my heart. I think academic success was the most important goal in my life at that time. But I did not feel that I really wanted to devote all my life to achieving academic success. There had to be something more important and meaningful in my life. But I did not know what it was.

Now God has brought peace to my heart. I feel I have somebody that I can always depend on. God’s people in the US are very important in my life. They have provided me help, support, teaching, and prayers. They are messengers of light and God’s words. Without them, I would not have known about God.

Our most challenging struggle is the English language. Although many international students can read and understand, it’s hard to speak out our thoughts. There were also other struggles, such as completely new courses, many tests, the food, and the car. According to my experience, one good way to solve these problems is to make new friends.

People at the church helped me to know God and to study Bible. I found that God’s people are friendly, willing to help and never ask for return. In Sunday school class, not only we improve our English and communication skills, we learned the truth from the Bible. We had a lot of fun activities, camping, field trip, BBQ. It makes me feel that I am in a big family. The people around me also help me strengthen my belief, and I want to be like them too.

My life completely changed after I trust in Jesus Christ. I used to worry a lot, about my future, my family, my career. After I believe in God, I know God would take care of my future, and everything. Through prayer, I achieved so many things. I truly thank God that He is with me all the time and knows what I need. Even when I am a sinner, He chose me and saved me.
