On the Receiving End

Much emphasis in this traditional Candidate Class issue of the Message is placed on those who are going to the field. Their testimonies tell how God has given them a desire to be involved in missions and how He has been faithful to prepare them and lead them every step of the way. The feature article grapples with what individuals go through when facing God’s apparent call on their lives for mission work, in hopes that others will identify and answer the call as well.

But although the attention here focuses on the sent ones, for me the excitement over these newly appointed ones comes from imagining the people they are going to reach. During the recognition service at the end Candidate Seminar, each new missionary was given an embroidered towel, reminding them that they are “Sent to Serve.”

Because these new missionaries have made themselves available for the task, many more people around the world will come to know Christ and be discipled. More women in Ukraine will find hope in Christ as one goes to counsel them through their unwanted pregnancies. More people in Ireland will experience new life as a few more go to share and demonstrate genuine Christianity. More Muslims will find the true God as we send a few more to build relationships with them. More leaders in Brazil will be equipped to build up their churches and send out their own missionaries as a few more go to train them.

As you leaf through this magazine, pray for the candidates as they begin the process of raising prayer and financial support, but do not forget the very reason why they are going. Pray for the ministry God is already preparing for them, and for the precious people they have a burning desire to reach with the gospel.
