The Missionary Family: Help Returning Missionary Kids

Russell E. Ebersole, Jr.

My previous article explained some of the reasons missionary kids (MKs) need encouragement and help when they reenter the United States, their “home” country. You may be one of God’s instruments to provide such help!

When MKs return on furlough, seek opportunities to get to know them better. If possible, meet them upon their arrival from overseas and have a special gift for them. Help them get acclimated to their new location. Introduce them to Sunday school classes and home Bible studies. Teenagers, especially, need to feel at home with their peer group in your church. You could even plan special events for their family, such as bowling or miniature golfing.

MKs returning to the United States for college or work are not always accompanied by a parent who is able to help them with the new challenges they face. You can help them with the logistics of acquiring a driver’s license, setting up a bank account, finding summer employment, etc. Doctors and dentists in the church may be able to assist with medical needs. There are several fine “reentry” seminars available in North America, and your church and other supporting churches may arrange for and finance MKs’ attendance at one of these.

While MKs are at college, let them know they are cared for. Remember their birthdays (care packages are a special treat), and assure them that your home is open to them during school holidays and vacations.

Shortly after their return, it may be helpful for returning adult MKs to informally meet with the pastor(s) and mission committee members for a debriefing. This provides a forum for MKs to share their unique perspectives about ministry on the field. They could share their apprehensions, aspirations, and specific needs. Giving your MKs a listening and interested ear will greatly encourage them and motivate you to pray more earnestly for them.

What a wonderful privilege you have to be an encouraging, nurturing friend to young MKs who are seeking to find their way through the maze of new challenges in their own country! You can make a lasting impact on their lives and help to mold them into the young adults God wants them to be.
